Always There, Beneath the Surface

You will all see it soon enough, but I probably got to see it before you, so take that. The Superman II we all knew existed, the one that was more plot and less camp, has finally seen the light of day. Imagine the look on Dick Donner’s face when he got to see it for the first time. How rare and how wonderful it is that after 30 years, a film lost to the world was not only unearthed, but was willed back into the mainstream by fans. For those of you who don’t know the full story of what happened to the film, you can check out some of the special features on the disc.

But I digress. The film, although choppy at points and sometimes containing lame CG to fill in gaps, is approximately 1000% better than the Superman II you already know. And one main complaint about the second film in the series is finally answered: How can he lose all his powers FOREVER and get them back in 20 minutes? Well, see the movie and you’ll find out.

It’s Thanksgiving, family things to be done, so I’ll continue this later. But what a Happy Thanksgiving it has been. Thank you, Dick. I almost forgive you for 16 Blocks.
